In Our Humble Opinion

9 Things You Should Know About Record Store Day

For a fan of physical album, I bet Record Store Day is one of the ‘holy’ days for you. According to the Record Store Day website, this annual event will be held again in the next of 20 days. But, if you haven’t heard about Record Store Day, here’s some fun facts about Record Store Day

9 Things You Should Know About Record Store Day

Record Store Day 2016

  1. Record Store Day is a dedicated day to celebrate the love of buying physical albums and keeping the culture of the independently owned record store alive. This celebration founded in 2007 and always held on the third Saturday of April which is why this year Record Store Day will be held in April 16.
  2. RSD founded by Eric Levin, Michael Kurtz, Carrie Colliton, Amy Dorfman, Don Van Cleave, and Brian Poehner in Baltimore, USA.
  3. Although we only celebrate RSD in one day, the RSD organization keeps the official website alive. They also provides promotions, marketing, even contests to support independent stores.
  4. On this special day, the participant stores usually will hold festivities, like meet & greets with artist and performances.
  5. What makes RSD more special is the special limited cd and vinyl release from musicians who participated in RSD. Also, this limited collections are only distributed to shops participating in the event.
  6. The celebration of RSD began to grow internationally, including in the UK, Ireland, Japan, Canada, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Germany, since 2009.
  7. Since 2010 there’s an official ambassador of RSD to spread the news of how important the stores to musicians. For 2016, Metallica is the official ambassador.
  8. In Indonesia, RSD began to be celebrated since 2010. The celebrations isn’t only held in Jakarta, but also in the other cities, like Bandung, Yogyakarta, Malang, Solo, Palu, Samarinda, and Makassar.
  9. Although the main purpose of RSD is to help people buying physical albums and keep independent stores alive, this event gathers some critics. One of the critics is about the effect of limited releases that being re-sold, mostly online, just hours after the event end with inflated prices.

Apart from the critics, RSD is still one of the efficient way to help both musicians and music lover to gather around and talking about music, more than just selling and buying music. Here’s one good quote from Nick Hornby that I think could describe the role of RSD.
“Yes, yes, I know. It’s easier to download music, and probably cheaper. But what’s playing on your favourite download store when you walk into it? Nothing, that’s what. Who are you going to meet in there? Nobody. Where are the notice boards offering flatshares and vacant slots in bands destined for superstardom? Who’s going to tell you to stop listening to that and start listening to this? Go ahead and save yourself a couple of quid. The saving will cost you a career, a set of cool friends, musical taste and, eventually, your soul. Record stores can’t save your life. But they can give you a better one.”

Most Anticipated

Zealyn is an American singer-songwriter. She’s formerly known as Angie Miller, the third winner from American Idol Season 12. Angie Miller released her first EP, Weathered, on August 2014 and it is definitely a great EP. Love all songs, especially This Is The Life and Lost In The Sounds.

On 26th February 2016, she introduced her new stage name called Zealyn and released her new single, Talk:Listen. Her upcoming electro-pop debut album, Lymbic System, will release around summer 2016. Can’t wait to listen her debut album and I can say Zealyn is one of the most anticipated singer for this year.

If you’re still wondering and never heard about her music, here’s the lead single from her upcoming album called Talk:Listen. Enjoy the music…!!

Jess Glynne is a singer-songwriter from London, England. I’m really sure you already heard about her before. Her single, Hold My Hand, always played in the radio and her debut album, I Cry When I Laugh (2015), get a huge success in so many countries. I totally love all songs from her album and I think it’s been three weeks in a row I already listened her album and never get bored. All Saints’s will Come Back With Their New Album, Red Flag, on April 2016!!

For all All Saints’s fans who already wait for almost a decade – well, including me – surely can’t stop smiling widely until now. Yes! My favorite nineties girls group are back and will release their new album, Red Flag, on 8th April 2016. Their first single from this album called One Strike was already released in 26th February 2016. This song was written by one of the group member, Shaznay Lewis, based on what happened with her group mate, Nicole Appleton when she divorced with Oasis’s vocalist, Liam Gallagher. When the first time I heard this song, I totally love it. Love the beat and always love their voice. Although it’s been a long time, but I knew they never lost their creativity to make such a great music.

For you who never heard about this girls group, All Saints was formed in London in 1993. At first, they are known as All Saints with Shaznay Lewis, Melanie Blatt, and Simone Rainford as the members. But then, Rainford left the group and in 1995, sisters Natalie and Nicole Appleton joined the group. Since then, All Saints become one of the most popular groups in 1990’s beside Spice Girls. Their debut album called All Saints was released in 1997 and got a huge success in UK music chart. This album was followed by other success album, Saints and Sinners (2000) . Their single called Pure Shores was used as a soundtrack for one of Leo’s movie, The Beach. After this album, they are controversially split and reformed in 2006 with their third album Studio1. And now, they are back with their new single and album. Yes..! Can’t wait to listen their new album and I’m sure it’s gonna be awesome.

Here is the music video of their single One Strike from the upcoming album, Red Flag. Enjoy..!

Album Review

Album Review: Lovers Electric – Strangers

Our first album review is Strangers from Lovers Electric, a husband and wife duo band from Australia. I found them from Soundcloud and I was falling in love with their music when I heard their song called Across The River for the first time. The sound of piano and Eden Boucher’s voice at the first minutes totally stole my ears. Then, I decide to download their last album, Strangers, which actually already released since October 2015.

When the first time I heard this album, the thing that cross in my mind is why I just found them right now. This is definitely a great album. The upbeat opening track, Dangerous Games, become a perfect song to start the journey of this album. Eden Boucher and David Turley’s voice totally perfect each other and the sound of guitar and drum beat in the second track, If Love Is Not the Answer, definitely makes you falling in love with their music deeper and deeper. After two upbeat songs, they tried to slow the music tempo with my favorite song, Across the River and Waiting for Something to Happen. The tempo get a little bit faster again with Storm and followed by Ordinary Day which has a great lyrics. David Turley show his awesome voice with semi acoustic song, Brave Men. The next song called New Day totally makes you want to stomp your feet and clap your hands. All I Need is a little bit darker and different than the others, but the music totally awesome. Once again, Eden’s voice gave me a chills with a song called Broken Glass. The last two song, Ten Minutes and Home are slow beat song, but definitely perfect songs to close the journey of this album.

The conclusion is their album totally awesome. I think I already hear it for two weeks in a row. David and Eden’s voice already stole my ears and the composition of the songs in this album doesn’t make you get bored easily. Their music totally great. Well, if I can give a score, I will give 8 for their album. I think I will try to hear another album from them.
