Saving Face by Wild Child

I’ve been listening to Wild Child’s album, Fools, for more than a month and pretty sure will continuing listen to the album for months to come. Besides Fools and RenoSaving Face is another track that I couldn’t stop listening to. This song capture a different angle of love story, how pride gives you trouble in the love life, how it makes you want to laugh over your stupid behavior but then you end up helplessly cursing your pride. They deliver the song with a simple acoustic verse and build a tension with tapping drum and dancing violin after the chorus, persuading you to join them singing this song, which is always success on me. Yes, I just can’t listen to this song without, at least, humming along with Kelsey Wilson and Alexander Beggins.

Here, click the play button and join the army, take a listen to my currently listening song, Saving Face by Wild Child 🙂

In Our Humble Opinion

Songs that Inspired by Literature

Ever wonder where the musicians get their inspiration? Ever heard lyrics that slightly familiar with something you ever read? If the answers are yes, maybe there’s a word that pop up on your mind now, book! Yes, you guys probably already realized that book, or literature, has a reciprocal relationship in the case of giving inspiration with music. Many authors had admit that they listen to some songs or album from some musician while they write their book and so does the musicians. I picked some musician, mostly the one I love ;), whose songs has been inspired by literature below.

Poet by Bastille

Aside getting inspired from a television show, Twin Peaks, for their song Laura Palmer, Dan Smith–Bastille’s vocalist, is also write a song inspired by literature. He admit that the inspiration behind their song, Poet, is Sonnet 18 written by William Shakespeare. Perhaps the inspiration comes from these lines:

Nor shall Death brag thou wander’st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st:
So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Which in Poet, he writes:

I have written you down
Now you will live forever
And all the world will read you
And you live forever
In eyes not yet created
On tongues that are not born
I have written you down
Now you will live forever

Besides Poet, Dan Smith also gather inspiration from literature for his other song, called, Weight of Living Pt. 1. This time, the inspiration come from Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem, The Rime of The Ancient Mariner. You can hear the ‘click’ sound from the use of Albatross word in both poem and song.

Breezeblocks by Alt-J

For Alt-J’s fans you probably already heard that Breezeblocks is inspired by children book, Where the Wild Things Are written by Maurice Sendak. You can find the lyrics quoted the dialogue with a little modification. While Sendak wrote, “Please don’t go, we’ll eat you whole, we love you so!” Alt-J’s lyrics stated, Please don’t go, I’ll eat you whole
I love you so, I love you so, I love you so. Well, I bet though the lyrics potray an obsessive kind a needy love, and quite creepy, you just can’t help to sing a long and liking this song, hm? 😀

Don’t Look Back in Anger by Oasis

This 1996 signature song of Oasis, which is one of my favorite too, is also has a connection with literature world. This time the inspiration, especially for the title, come from a play, Look Back in Anger written by John Osborne in 1956. The title play also become a song tittle for David Bowie’s song in the Lodger album.  David Bowie himself has influence for Oasis music.

Body Electric by Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey has several songs that inspired by literature. In her album, Paradise, Del Rey has Body Electric that has a relation with I Sing the Body Electric, Walt Whitman’s poem. The tittle of the poem become the chorus and one of the lines is “Whitman is my daddy, Monaco’s my mother, Diamonds are my bestest friend.”

Another Del Rey’s song that inspired by literature is Off to the Races. There are lines that has references how Humbert Humbert, one of the character in Lolita–a novel written by Vladimir Nabokov, seduced Dolores Haze.

I know that there are only 4 musicians that I took a sample with, mostly, because I know and like those songs. If you know other songs that inspired by literature, and you like them, a comment is very much welcome 😀

There’s something different and unique about her music and it is so addicting. The combination between acoustic and electronic instruments makes the rhythm and the melodies so rich and so catchy. Plus, Gordi’s voice is one of the most wonderful and gorgeous voice ever. Her songs also has a wonderful lyrics. So, all I can say is her music is a perfect mixture of every awesome music elements. I think five songs in her EP never enough for me. Definitely can’t wait to hear her full album and I’m sure she will be a huge singer really soon. So, yes! Gordi really deserve as the most anticipated singer of this month.

Album Review

Album Review: Hope by The Strumbellas

Well, I’m so sure most of you already know about The Strumbellas, right? Yes! This Canadian indie folk-rock band was formed in 2008 with six members: Simon Ward (vocals & guitar), David Ritter (vocals & keys), Jon Hembrey (lead guitar), Isabel Ritchie (violin), Darryl James (bass), and Jeremy Drury (drum). They already released two albums before, My Father and The Hunter (2012) and We Still Move on the Dance Floor (2013). Both albums got a huge success and brought The Strumbellas won Juno Awards for Roots and Traditional Album of the Year in 2014.

In April 2016, The Strumbellas are back with their new album called Hope. Their first single from this album, Spirits, was already released in the end of 2015. Okay, have you listen to this song? Well, honestly, I can’t stop listening to Spirits until now since the first time I heard it. This song makes me so curious to listen their whole new album and yes, my curiosity has been answered by a wonderful package of songs that makes me more addicted to their music. Yes, my first impression for this album is melodically addicting and lyrically amazing. Spirits definitely a perfect opening song for this album. The melody is so good and once you hear this song, I’m sure it won’t be the last time. You’ll still hear Simon Ward shouting, “I got guns in my head and they won’t go” over and over again inside your head.

Shovel and Dirt and We Don’t Know are like a mid-tempo acoustic folk song in the beginning, but the sound of folk-rock are getting strong in the mid-section until the end of the songs. Plus, the sound of violin by Isabel Ritchie in We Don’t Know definitely got me. Next song is Wars and Dog which is my favorite songs from this album. Both songs has a wonderful tunes that makes me never getting bored to listen it over and over again. The rhythm of acoustic guitar in both songs somehow makes me more calm.

They start to slow the tempo with The Hired Band. Well, the sounds of bass and trumpet makes me want to do a slow dance. This song is followed by Young and Wild which is the most upbeat song from this album. I totally love this song. Young and Wild is a very entertain and cheerful song that makes you want jump and always clap your hand. It is like a mood booster song for me.

Okay, we continue to another song. Next song is The Night Will Save Us. This song has similar tempo like The Hired Band. Once again, the sounds of Isabel Ritchie’s violin already gave me chills. I Still Make Her Cry is a little bit different from the other song because it is a wonderful piano acoustic song. This song already gave a different sense with a different arrangement after some upbeat songs. in this album. The last two songs, David and The Wild Sun, are another mid-tempo song and definitely a perfect song to close the journey of this album.

As a conclusion, Hope is definitely one of the most entertaining and the most enjoyable album I’ve ever heard. Each song will give you a different chills that makes you want to listen it over and over again. Oh, I forgot to mention how good the lyrics they used in every song. I think I can’t pick my favorite lyrics because I like all the lyrics in every songs. Almost the lyrics is about life and how we always keep our hope to never give up to chase our dreams. Yupp, the combination between the melodies, the lyrics, and the voice of Simon Ward makes this album become a wonderful thing to hear. I’m so sure you’ll love them even more after you hear this album and I’m sure they are going to be a huge band really soon. Well, if I can give score, I will give 8,5 for their album.
