If you haven’t heard about this place, let’s start from the history of this place. In 2000, Max Mamikunian and Marko Shelter decide to bought an abandoned place at Cahuenga Boulevard to make a coffee shop. Right! This place began as a coffee shop which provide a lot of coffee and live music performance. Everything’s began when a singer-songwriter, Gary Jules, saw the piano through Hotel Café’s windows and convinced Mike Shafer to give him a chance to performed in this place. Many people watched that performance including The Cary Brothers.

Since then, Hotel Café provides music live performance every nights in a week, from new local singer-songwriter until national touring act from famous musicians. Some of the past notable performances in Hotel Café include Sara Bareilles, Ingrid Michaelson, Meiko, Rachel Yamagata, Laura Jansen, Imogen Heap, Laura Marling, Adele, Ed Sheeran, Mumford and Sons, Greg Laswell, and Damien Rice.

Then, they found so many hidden talents so people start to take notice. Music industry start to take notice. This place also really well-known as the place where movie or TV music supervisor gathered and try to discover up-and-coming music talent for the projects they’re working on. For many singer-songwriters, being perform in front of music supervisor in low-pressure atmosphere definitely become a great chance and bring a huge benefit for any singer-songwriter’s career.

One of the famous music supervisor, Alexandra Patsavas, or we also known as Shonda Rhime’s favorite music supervisor and I think my favorite too used Hotel Café’s website and venue to discover song and musician that she wants to use for the TV series and movie. Honestly, I’m kind of inspired with the music that she choose for the series, like Grey’s Anatomy and The O.C. From this series, she introduced me to new musician that I never heard before and music that actually really worth to hear.

So, in my humble opinion, Hotel Café definitely has a very important roles for every singer-songwriter who just started their music career, for every music supervisor who wants to discover new talents, and for all music lover who loved to discover new music. Tijana, The Next Rising Stars from Australia

Once again, Australian music industry already makes me so amazed. After so many great musicians like Gordi, Vance Joy, Lovers Electric, and Charles William, now get ready for the invasion from another upcoming rising stars, Tijana. Tijana Cerro is an indie-pop singer-songwriter from Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. She already started writing her own music since age 14. Now, she just released her awesome debut single called Stars which was premiered exclusively on Triple J on August 18th.

Stars definitely got my eartention since the first time I heard it through Discover Weekly on Spotify. Stars is a powerful upbeat song with great and rich melodies from so many music instruments. The guitar’s sounds at the first minute totally success gave a great first impression for all people who listened to this song for the first time. The next minute, this song start get its beat and makes you falling deeper and when its enter the chorus, I’m sure I’m already falling in love with this song. The beat of the drum combined with the tunes of piano makes everything so perfect. You also can hear the sound of percussion at the second phase of the pre-chorus. Plus, Tijana’s voice makes everything really worth to hear. Tijana collaborate with Jean Paul-Fung to produced this song and I think she’s gonna be a huge star really soon. Her debut EP is expected to be released later this year and I can’t wait to hear it.

Album Review

Album Review: Chaleur Humaine by Christine and the Queens

My first encounter with Christine and the Queens’ music was her single, Tilted. At that time, I was thinking, hey, this is good. But not until I heard Saint Claude that I began curious about her debut album, Chaleur Humaine. So, yeah, forgive my tardiness because, even after months since the album released, I want to write the album review :’)

Christine and the Queens is a stage name of French singer, songwriter, Héloïse Letissier. Before releasing her studio album, Christine and the Queens already released some EPs, which are Miséricorde (2011 and self-released), Mac Abbey (2012), Nuit 17 à 52 (2013), Saint Claude (2015), and Intranquillité (2015). But then, it seems the English version of Chaleur Humaine is the trigger that bring Christine and the Queens name to the broader stage.

Chaleur Humaine, released last February in UK, consist of 12 synthpop songs. Maybe because originally the album was release in French version, there are lines in French language in every song. Though people consider her music in pop territory, she brings thoughtful issues in her songs. Her lyric could be bold, sharp, or poetic, but never cheesy. You’ll feel how personal and deep-thought is her music since the beginning of the album; In iT, she share her point of view about the lack of equality gender in this world.  In Saint Claude, TiltedParadis Perdus, she brings sadness into something that doesn’t always have a right to paralyzed you, you can also embrace it and deal with it. In this album, Letissier works with other musicians, which are Tunji Ige in No Harm Is Done and Perfume Genius in Jonathan.

After hearing the full album you’ll realize that Christine and the Queens has something unique that differentiate her from other artist. I think it’s because, in every song, Letissier’s voice dance effortlessly with the tunes, whether it’s in pure electropop or with a slightly touch of hip hop and R&B. So, you’ll find that this album is so easy listening to. Powerful voice in upbeat songs, like in Narcissus Is BackSafe and Holy, and Here; and delicate one in slow down tempo songs, like in Paradis Perdus, Half Ladies, Jonathan, and Night 52. It’s a pleasure to just listen to the album.

Now, if you haven’t try to listen to this album, kindly press the play button and share with us your thought about Chaleur Humaine, enjoy!
